When I first started cycling, my motivation wasn’t about endurance, adventure or pushing my limits. It was about trying to shrink my body. Like so many women, I believed that if I lost weight, I would feel happier, more confident and more comfortable in my own skin.
Cycling felt like a way to get there.
At the beginning, every ride had a purpose tied to weight loss. I was closely watching the number, whether that was the distance cycled, calories burned, time on the bike. I believed that if I worked hard enough and rode far enough, I would eventually reach the goal I thought I wanted.
But somewhere along the way, something changed. The longer I rode, the more I realised that the number on the scale wasn’t the thing that mattered most. What I was really searching for was something deeper. Confidence. Self-worth. And the belief that I was worth showing up for.

For years, many of us are taught that exercise is the answer to fixing ourselves. We’re told we should move our bodies so we can shrink them.
But the more I cycled, the more I realised that what I actually needed wasn’t weight loss. What I needed was a different relationship with myself. Cycling gave me something that chasing weight loss never did. It gave me space to breathe. Time away from pressure and expectations. And slowly, it started giving me something even more powerful. A sense of self belief.
I began to notice small shifts. I felt calmer after rides. My mind felt clearer. I started feeling proud of what my body could do, rather than frustrated about what it looked like. Cycling stopped being about trying to become a different version of myself. Instead, it became about learning to value and support the person I already was.
The Confidence That Comes From Cycling
One of the most surprising things about cycling is that it doesn’t just strengthen your legs. It strengthens your belief in yourself. When women begin working towards cycling their first 100km, they often start with doubts.
They wonder: Am I fit enough? Will I be able to keep up? What if I can’t finish? But every week of training builds something deeper.
It builds proof. Proof that you can show up even when something feels challenging. Proof that your body is capable of adapting and growing stronger. Proof that you can achieve things you once thought were beyond you. And that kind of confidence carries far beyond the bike.

One of the biggest myths about cycling long distances is that you need to be extremely fit before you start. In reality, endurance is something that builds gradually over time.
A structured plan for women cycling their first 100km should include:
